about the project
A RETROSPECTIVE
2025
growing from a simple observation: the stories of alternative music subcultures are scattered everywhere – in old YouTube videos, defunct MySpace profiles, niche subreddits, and forgotten hard drives.
as an 'elder emo', researching how subcultures evolved online, I realized that traditional approaches to preservation weren't enough. museums do important work, but they can turn living cultures into static artefacts. social media spreads subcultural aesthetics widely, but often strips away their ideologies.
the archive doesn't claim to be complete or definitive. subcultural history belongs to everyone who lived it, and every person's experience adds another layer to the story. that's why i wanted to include a space for community submissions – because these histories are still being written, and rewritten.
whether you're here for nostalgia, research, or curiosity about scenes you never experienced firsthand, this archive invites you to explore at your own pace. click around, discover connections, and maybe find a piece of your own story reflected in these digital memories.
please send your submissions to x.gia@yahoo.com to be featured in any new rooms we add! (subject to approval)
